AFRIMETS Legal Metrology School

The 2014 AFRIMETS Legal Metrology School, a ten day training event on the foundations of legal metrology and quality for participants from developing economies and members of the Intra-Africa Metrology System (AFRIMETS), will take place in Hammamet, Tunisia from 8 to 17 October 2014.

The event will be organized by AFRIMETS under a United Nations Industrial Develoment Organization (UNIDO) project with funding from the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). It will be held in cooperation with the National Metrology Agency of Tunisia (ANM), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), and the ACP-EU Technical Barriers to Trade Programme(ACP-EU TBT Programme).

This edition of the Legal Metrology School will provide participants with basic knowledge in legal metrology in theory and practice, including field visits to enterprises to witness applied legal metrology. It is designed for Legal Metrologists who are in the early stages of their careers, wish to expand their knowledge on legal metrology, and seek to contribute to its development on the national and regional levels.

Programme Overview: The Legal Metrology School will provide training on the key areas identified in the AFRIMETS Strategic Roadmap 2012-2016 as providers of the most impact in terms of delivering national and regional benefits. Such key areas will satisfy priority continental needs in legal metrology, such as measurement uncertainty and measurement errors, traceability of measurements, mass and related quantities, length, volume, electricity, and pre-packaged goods.

The practical training, the visits to industry and the group assignment will bring the full legal metrology spectrum into perspective. Furthermore, delegates will also benefit from an important networking opportunity, as the event is expected to gather participants from over 40 African countries.

Registration: Please download the application form and general conditions and submit the completed application form, a motivation letter, a Curriculum Vitae, a letter of support from your organization and a copy of your passport by 31 May 2014. A voluntary fee of 150 USD per participant is suggested to recover costs. The details for the payment will be communicated to participants upon reception of their applications.

Selection Process: Complete applications submitted by 31 May 2014 will be reviewed by a selection committee, which will inform applicants of their eligibility by 15 June 2014.

Selected candidates will be provided with training materials, mid-morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea for the duration of the programme.

Travel and Accommodation: Each delegate will be expected to make his or her own travel arrangements. The Organizing Committee has arranged for favourable hotel accommodation rates where the event will take place.

Sponsorship: Candidates are encouraged to look for sponsorship from their national institutions, which may be able to support them with travel costs, accomodation costs, per diem, etc. Limited sponsorship may be available for selected candidates. The Organizing Committee will inform selected candidates on the extent of this sponsorship and its pre-conditions.
